Keep eyes on MDC Brooklyn

Thank you for standing outside MDC Brooklyn

One night outside is how a movement starts. What happens next is what changes MDC. Here is how to take part, whatever time you have.

Why this continues

The rally ended. The demands did not.

About 1,500 people are confined at MDC Brooklyn, roughly 200 of them in two units designated for ICE. It is the only long-term ICE detention center in New York City. People held there report 23-hour lockdowns, no outdoor space, very limited medical care and overuse of solitary confinement.

For a year and a half, neighbors and faith leaders have stood outside every Tuesday night. Attention fades fast. People who show up week after week are what keeps it from fading.

Day of the Dead altar

Saturday, October 31, and Tuesday, November 3, 6 to 7 PM: we are building an altar for the people who died in immigration detention. Bring a flower, an LED candle, or a name.

Who holds whom

MDC Brooklyn is run by the federal Bureau of Prisons, which also holds people for ICE under an agreement with the Department of Homeland Security. People held for ICE and people in Bureau of Prisons custody follow different legal processes, so a demand has to reach the right agency.

What we are demanding
  • Adequate medical care for allAccording to Bureau of Prisons court filings reported in June 2026, MDC Brooklyn had two doctors and five nurses. Source
  • Healthy meals for all
  • Admittance for outside clergy to serve our neighbors inside
  • Full visitation rights for friends of the detained
  • Access for the press to observe and document conditions
  • An end to solitary confinement
